Between services, wash the dust filters yourself monthly — slide them out, rinse, dry, slide back. It's ten minutes, keeps cooling strong, and stretches the time between paid visits.
Signs you're overdue: airflow feels weaker than it used to, a musty smell when the unit starts, or water dripping from the indoor unit. All three mean the coil and drainage need attention, not just the filter.
If the unit still smells or drips after a normal service, it's overdue for a chemical wash — regular servicing keeps you off that path.
